Although it was one of the first African countries to introduce a universal health insurance system (NHIS), Ghana aims to significantly strengthen its healthcare infrastructure. In 2010, the country launched the construction of a regional hospital in Bekwai. However, due to a lack of funds, the project could not be completed.
At the end of 2018, Ellipse Projects put together a €23 million financing package with UK Export Finance (UKEF) and Deutsche Bank to enable the territory to complete the hospital. The contract covered the renovation of the existing building, completion of the works, and the provision of medical equipment. With a capacity of 120 beds, the hospital was finally handed over in early 2021. It houses various specialist departments, including primary care, gynaecology and obstetrics, paediatrics and surgery.
Deploying infrastructure with specific expertise and the ability to meet major care needs at a regional level is complementary to a cutting-edge national health offer that has historically been concentrated in the capital.
