Like many countries, Senegal is seeking to improve access to healthcare for its rural population. The scarcity and poor road conditions, in particular, prevent many people from travelling to existing healthcare facilities. Against this backdrop, the Senegalese government decided to build four hospitals in regions distant from the capital.
Senegal asked Ellipse Projects to design, build, equip and commission four hospitals: three with 150 beds (in Sédhiou, Kaffrine and Kédougou) and one with 300 beds (in Touba). The latter is also equipped with a dialysis centre, a burns unit, a histopathology laboratory and a radiotherapy unit.
The project was financed by a loan from Société Générale.
As well as improving access to healthcare for the local populations, the hospital projects had a significant social impact: site construction involved some 700 people for each hospital, while 30 local businesses were involved as suppliers or subcontractors.
As part of this project, which was carried out during the Covid-19 pandemic, Ellipse Projects made a donation of 100 million CFA francs to the Ministry of Health to help combat the coronavirus.
